CivicSignal · MediaData Registry · Ownership · Reach

The registry behind every outlet on the map.

MediaData is the underlying registry of Africa's licensed media houses — who owns what, what they reach, and how that changes over time. It's the foundation layer everything else on CivicSignal is mapped against, and the base CfA builds custom, partner-facing dashboards on top of for specific countries and programmes.

9,177media outlets mapped
581parent media houses identified
7,952journalists & media workers mapped

What it is

A registry, not a crawl.

Where MediaCloud collects what outlets publish, MediaData records what an outlet is: its ownership structure, licensing status, and reach — mapped once by CfA's research teams and kept current rather than inferred from scraped content.

Coverage

Licensed & established media

Broadcasters, newspapers, wire services and licensed digital outlets across Africa's established, regulated media industry.

Fields

Ownership & reach

Who owns an outlet, how it's licensed, and independently sourced reach figures — the fields CivicSignal's other tools reference back to.

Method

Mapped once, kept current

Built through direct research rather than automated discovery, then revisited on a maintenance cycle as ownership and status change.

The continental figures above are a registry snapshot. A full browsable view of the continental registry is pending — but for individual programmes, MediaData already ships as a live, partner-facing dashboard. Mali, below, is a working example.
By the numbers

Where the outlets are, and what kind they are.

Pulled live from CfA's continental MediaData dashboard: 9,177 outlets across 61 countries of HQ origin, broken down by medium and ownership structure.

A dashboard built on it: Mali

What a MediaData dashboard actually looks like, once it's built for a country.

For the USAID Basiki ni Tagne Kunafoni programme — a consortium of Pact, Code for Africa and Accountability Lab Mali — MediaData was built out into a live dashboard mapping Mali's entire media ecosystem: outlets, ownership, industry bodies, and the people who staff them, refreshed on a quarterly audit cycle.

745media outlets serving Mali-based audiences
641of them Mali-owned/operated (indigenous media)
16parent media houses identified
90journalists, editors and media workers mapped
Structure

Ownership, medium & reach

Every outlet's governance model, primary editorial medium, publication frequency and geographic reach — radio still dominates Mali's ~400 licensed stations, but the dashboard tracks online, print, TV and social-first outlets in the same registry.

Language

French, Bambara & beyond

Primary and secondary editorial languages down to the outlet level — Bambara, Tamasheq, Songhai, Peulh and more alongside French — the same granularity the baseline research found existing datasets lacked.

Spotlight

Mapping the fact-checkers

A dedicated Fact-Checking Newsrooms table inside the dashboard — AFP Fact Check, Africa Check, Benbere Verif, DjeliCheck, MaliCheck, Mopti Check and more — tracking accreditation (AFCA, IFCN, Meta's 3PFC) and editorial focus for each.

Why Mali. A CfA/Pact baseline analysis for the same programme found Mali to be the most-targeted country on the continent for coordinated influence operations — more than 70 documented campaigns over three years — running through an information ecosystem that is 96% mobile-reachable but only 9% on social media. The registry above and the fact-checker map that sits inside it are part of the response: strengthening the 11 fact-checking initiatives already working in-country (7 of them Malian-led) rather than starting from zero.
