A survey of 42 South African creators and independent journalists — who they are, what they do, how they sustain the work, and where it ties back into institutional journalism. A partnership between Code for Africa, the Center for News, Technology and Innovation (CNTI), and ProjectC.
Self-described titles span journalist, editor, founder/publisher, columnist, creative director, PR officer and podcaster/analyst — a blended professional identity, not one job category.
A mature cohort, not a wave of newcomers — 2023 and 2024 each account for only 4 launches.
Roughly an even split — the rest arrived from finance, tech, academia, civil society and the arts. Several describe an explicit career pivot.
78% have under 100k followers — a mid/long-tail ecosystem, not a set of mega-influencers. (n = 39)
67% (28 of 42) named a journalism organization they work directly with — Daily Maverick, Mongabay, SANEF, the Association of Independent Publishers and university journalism departments among them. Only one respondent said "none."
Reach doesn't cleanly predict monetization. Some sub-25k creators report full monetization; some with 500k–1M+ report only partial.
Journalists who identify unambiguously as "Yes" monetize fully at a higher rate (12/27, 44%) than those who say "it's complicated" (3/11, 27%).
CivicSignal's mapping framework is grounded in a distinction among three related but conceptually separate functions:
These functions frequently overlap — an actor may be a content creator, an influencer, a journalist, or a combination of the three.
The goal isn't a follower-count leaderboard. It's a fuller picture of who's producing and interpreting information, what standards and resources back their work, and where targeted support — funding, training, protection — could strengthen Africa's independent media ecosystem.
Public-interest journalist covering health, justice and inequality.
Podcast creator and host of one of SA's leading true-crime shows.
Science and climate journalist; contributes to Daily Maverick and Mongabay.
Investigative journalist with bylines at TIME and Context.
Creator and host of a long-running history podcast.

“News media in South Africa are staring down the barrel of an existential threat, and the bullet has already been fired. Many legacy brands that we know and still, despite everything, trust, will almost certainly disappear in the next few years.”
Read the article →“As of September 2024, about one in four people in the country said they get news from individuals rather than organisations; a striking figure in a media environment still largely understood through the lens of institutions.”
